United States Capitol Building
Washington D.C.
Hired as consultant to the Architect of the Capitol, we oversaw the conservation of four monumental skylights in the Senate and House Grand Staircases. These windows are rare examples of pre-Civil War American stained glass fabricated by the Gibson brothers from 1858 through 1861. Our responsibilities included preparing condition reports and conservation proposals, as well as developing an emergency removal and temporary storage plan which helped mitigate impending health and safety issues due to the stained glass panels’ advanced state of deterioration. We fabricated faux copies of stained glass panels printed onto acrylic panels and installed into the skylights as a temporary stop gap until the funds can be raised for proper conservation of these national treasures.
